The Courtauld

The research into colourmen stamps that forms the basis of this database was undertaken by Cathy Proudlove over a period of 40 years.
Examples have been contributed by curators and conservators from museums and galleries all over the world, as well as by independent conservators and individual collectors and dealers.

Digitisation of the stamps was carried out by Kate Stonor, as part of her Paul Mellon fellowship 2007-8 at the Courtauld Insititute of Art with assistance from Clare Richardson, also a Paul Mellon Fellow.

The images featured in the database were taken by Cathy Proudlove as part of her research or given for research use. We have attempted to contact copyright holders where known. If you feel that the copyright of any image has not been correctly acknowledged please contact .

We gratefully acknowledge the contribution of the late Richard Kissack in supplying a large number of images and in supporting the project over many years. We are most grateful to Jacob Simon for his support and encouragement throughout the project. This website should be used alongside his NPG website, an essential resource of detailed information about the firms who produced these marks and labels.

If you need further information regarding specific marks and labels, please contact We still wish to record dated examples of marks and their use by individual artists, and hope to expand the database to the end of the 20th century.
